About Us Information on Whitley Bay and District Province R.A.O.B. G.L.E.
Whitley Bay Province was formed in the North East of England in 1928, the same year as the opening of the Tyne Bridge. It was formed from Lodges of the Northumberland and North East Durham Province who it seemed wished to have greater control over their own destiny, Northumberland and North East Durham Province at that time being probably the Largest Province (In Area) in the Country. Covering the area from South of the River Tyne in the South and East, right up to the River Tweed at Berwick in the North and over to the Cambrian Border in the West.
Whilst the majority of Minor Lodges were situated primarily along the Banks of the River Tyne. There were many Lodges in the County of Northumberland in both the Mining and Agricultural Areas of the County. Transportation being what it was in those days, made it very difficult for those Lodges to travel to the Provincial Grand Lodge Meetings in Newcastle upon Tyne, and It was inevitable that Lodges in the Outlying areas should decide to break away and form their own Provinces.
This was to be the case and today there are no less than 5 Provinces within the old Province Boundaries, Whitley Bay being but 1 of them. This Province has faired better than most, and although many of the Original Lodges have become defunct, or amalgamated, no less than 4 New Lodges have been formed, and the Province now has 16 Lodges all of which are reasonably healthy and thriving. It also has a very strong Knights Chapter and Roll of Honour Assembly. There were Two R.A.O.B. Clubs in the Province, one in Whitley Bay, and one in North Shields but sadly the latter is now closed.
Whitley Bay Province is situated on the North Bank of the Mouth of the River Tyne, and the Coastal area in the East of the County from Percy Main (North Shields) in the West up to Cramlington and Cowpen Village (Blyth) in the North. The Minor Lodges are held in Cramlington, Cowpen Village, Blyth, Whitley Bay, and North Shields, with P.G.L. and Knights Chapter and R.O.H. Assembly meeting at Whitley Bay R.A.O.B. Club,
